Our curriculum is bespoke to Mayfield. It is made by us for our children. It is constantly under review and receiving small, but important updates and, above all, delivers the National Curriculum and Early Years Framework.

DISCIPLINARY AND SUBSTANTIVE KNOWLEDGE

In our latest stage three upgrades and developments, we have been focusing upon the forensic level of detail within our coverage and we have used our learning in relation to 'kinds of knowledge' to do this. We have undertaken extensive training into disciplinary and substantive knowledge and have used this as the framework for curriculum enhancement. It offers us that core basis to develop a strong, knowledge based curriculum for all of our children. You will see the presence of this in our documentation through this section of our website and those available for download. See the base of this page for a full flow chart.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

We have re-named our curriculum 'I Dream of Being...' to capture an overarching theme of ambition which comes through from our pupil voice and stakeholder work. We have found from listening to these various thoughts that our curriculum must promote the importance of academic, physical and pastoral work as a route to a more aspirant future. Creating ambition is easier said than done but the careful positioning of consistent messages, figures and actions we hope can help to foster greater hopes for the future in our children. Our previous title 'When I Grow Up...' reflected the fact that we were looking to future readiness with a heavy focus upon resilience, this very much remains but ambition is the driver behind our name change and the potential significance of this in setting the appropriate tone for all to see and share.

CURRICULUM HEADLINES - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Knowledge has been our fundamental starting point for our curriculum work at every stage. Tightening our coverage, evaluating the key learning that our children need to know in each subject. Further enhancing our progression in each subject over the seven year journey and refining our big episodes and events accordingly.

As you would expect, this has involved subject leaders updating and refining their planning and assessment documentation, including small tweaks to their overview coverage.

Each subject leader has reviewed their policy and created an overview navigation page to visually show how their subject is built.

We are also in the process of creating Concept Guides for each subject. These are being created to aid subject specific knowledge for all adults leading and supporting learning across school.

We continue to trial and test new ideas and approaches to gauge potential impact in line with our School Development Plan, these are focusing largely upon how we can adapt our planned teaching at the point of learning and final outcomes to meet the ever-widening needs of our children. Subject leaders have created a glossary for their subject ensuring that key vocabulary is introduced, repeated and built upon across each key stage. Subject leaders have applied our learning from our LCC Assessment Project and embedded these within their subject specific pedagogical documents. Our learning environments continue to receive upgrades including enhanced subject stations within each room, alongside newly created rewards and celebrations for every curriculum subject. These are led by subject champions comprising children and staff from across school and harnessing the specific gifts and talents of children in specific areas.

We continue to work alongside identified external colleagues and associations to develop our subject knowledge and our classroom provision, ensuring that new ideas are brought onboard and that challenge is maintained. Almost every subject area now has opportunity for extended provision through our clubs offer which is an aim we have held for the last few years. This wider provision is offering us subject enrichment and allows us to broaden the scope of what we can teach.

CURRICULUM CRAFT - CLASSROOM CRAFT

At every stage, we have tried to consider two aspects firstly the 'Curriculum Craft'which is basically what we teach and the knowledge we know our children need from their starting point. The second aspect has been what we call 'Classroom Craft' which means how this will look at the point of learning including how we teach, how we build our learning environments and what resources will be used to support the delivery. I suppose you could call this 'What We Learn' and 'How We Learn'. This is our holistic approach and beliefs tied closely to our overall vision with more subject specific pedagogy to be found within the specific subject documentation and their website pages.

The best way to see our current curriculum content and coverage is via the various subject pages.

The best summary of Classroom Craft/How We Learn can be found in the TEACHING & LEARNING APPROACH/POLICY which can be downloaded at the base of the page

Please refer to our individual subject pages for the finer details. Documents can also be downloaded from there. Each subject has two pages. 'Vision' gives you the deeper subject pedagogy and philosophy. 'Curriculum' shows you how this works practically across school.

Take a look at our archive stage one and stage two curriculum pages for more on the story of curriculum development in recent years at Mayfield.

From hereon you can read all about our curriculum, what we teach, how we teach it and why we teach it and we have split it into two sections:

1) INTENT: SUBJECT/CURRICULUM LEADING

Much of this section of the website is set out in subject areas.Allowing the leaders to summarise their current position and work, including all key documentation. Alongside this, you can find the background/archive story and detail behind our curriculum construction, planning and overall thinking.

2) IMPLEMENT & IMPACT: CURRICULUM LEARNING

This section of the website is our class and year group based section.Telling everyone more about what our children about in each year group and how we are doing it. You can see the teachers and class line-ups whilst taking at look at our special Stunning Start, Theme Events & Learning Celebration Big Episodes

We have created a flow chart below which captures our curriculum visually.
